Special Lesson - Spirit of Giving

This holiday season has been extra special, as this is the first yeat that my son has really grasped and gotten into Christmas.

He is just old enough to understand what Christmas means. It has made this Christmas the best one yet... Lil man helped (literally) put up the Christmas tree with his Papa, decorated the tree, helped us to set up the nativities (yes, we have three. Two bear nativities and one traditional nativity. When we were done, lil man said, "We need to go buy another nativity!"). He also was a great helper with putting out the wooden Swiss Christmas choo-choo, stockings and lights. From a parent's perspective, it has been so much fun to talk about Christmas, explaining the significance of certain ornaments, decorations and everything.

Lil man's school has a Toys for Tots drive. This year we took this opportunity to teach lil man about the spirit of giving. We told him that not all little boys and girls have toys and that this Christmas he was going to give a little boy and girl a new toy. He was really excited and took a lot of pride in this idea of giving a child who "doesn't have a train, a train."

The day came to donate the toys. I was a little worried that he would suddenly change his mind and want to keep the toys (especially as one was a Thomas train - which he loves). But, he made us very proud. Without hesitation he donated a toy for a girl and a toy for a boy.

When he got home he told us that he gave a little boy and girl a toy. He said he did this because they didn't have any toys. It was a special moment - a good learning moment.

I feel proud as a parent that I was able to teach such a valuable lesson to my son.

The joy of winter through a child's eyes

All summer long (yes, summer), Lil man has been watching Frosty the Snowman, because what family does not watch Christmas specials all year long! He recently transitioned onto Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (which we've been watching for months). He has taken a special liking to Bumble and also now equates snow to Christmas.

The other day we got our first few flakes of snow. When lil man learned of this, he immediately asked "Mommy, can we make a snowman?" Of course, there was no snow on the ground. He also kept saying "Bumble" as he thinks snow and Bumble go together. So instead, in a rare moment of craftiness, we made snowman out of marshmallows! Lil man had a blast using toothpicks to hold the body together and then smaller marshmallows for the arms and legs. I don't know if he had more fun making the snowmen or eating them! And papa got into it as well, putting my little snowman to shame. He made a HUGE snowman. Who knew that making marshmallow snowman would be such a fun family activity.

OK, now back to the snow... So the first snow came and when lil man found out, he was ecstatic!!! I told him when I picked him up from school. When we were walking out, snow was flying everywhere. Now, here is what was so sweet... I put my head down and tried to dodge the cold snow and lil man did the opposite. He looked up in the sky and directly into the snow - with the biggest grin I've ever seen. He was enjoying every moment of every flake touching his face. And he laughed and smiled. Only the joy a lil one could find from a simple, pure moment. It made me stop and think about life's pleasures.

The entire way home in the car, he talked about the snow - how it was covering the trees, cars and that he was going to make a snowman, snow train, etc. The excitement in his voice was inspiring and could even turn someone who prefers warmer weather, into a fan of the winter season.

The next day, lil man proudly put on his boots and talked about making snowmen and snow trains. When we got to school he ran to his teacher and said, "It snowed!!!" (though of course, she already knew this point, she played along). That night after we returned home, Papa did something very special. He and lil man put on their snow boots, snow pants, coats, scarves, gloves and hats - and they went outside. Of course it was dark, but that didn't stop these two. They got out the sled and Papa pulled lil man down the street to the end of the block. I could only imagine what the neighbors were thinking if they happened to look out at that moment. Two boys sledding in the dark. :) What a special time between a father and son.

Reflections

I can't believe how fast the past twelve weeks have gone. Cliche? Yes, but so true.

It is nearing 10 PM the night before returning to work after maternity leave. I'm left reflecting on everything that has taken place over the past weeks. A mosaic of memories, emotions and events that will forever change my life. I will cherish all of them always. For both the ups and downs have made this one of the very best, and most special times of my life.

Reflections...
- Surprise, scared, stressed about having my lil lady so early
- Yearning to hold her and having to wait - but, sooo worth the wait and a moment that I'll never forget
- Joyful that she was healthy and strong, though so small. Perfect little feet, hands, face. So sweet and lovely. Joy of latching on, advancing from each NICU room - another step closer to the door
- Sad to not have her visit my hospital room. Waking every day with anticipation of seeing my beautiful little miracle
- Sad and strange to leave without my baby; empty car seat
- Nervous about how long she would have to stay in the NICU. Making NICU my home, not to miss a minute with my little girl. Wanting her to know that she is loved, absorbing the strength from her mommy's arms. Relieved that she came home in less than two weeks
- Coming home!! The exultation!! A joyous day full of blessings
- Family and friends - and all of their outreach and generosity
- Cuddling at home! Just being home a joy. No commutes to see my lil peanut
- Sleeper smiles, squeaks, groans, grunts and all of the sweet little sounds from my expressive little lady. So much to say, right from the start. Telling us everything in her own way
- How proud I've been of my lil man. What a sweet, loving and caring big brother. Wanting her to reach out to him. Giving kisses and wanting to help. Hearing him say, "my baby"
- Learning what each sound means, playing, singing, talking, cuddling, laughing together
- Amazed at how she has grown - from 3 lb. 15 oz. to 9 lb. 12 oz . (with clothes on)
- Sleepless nights, gallons of caffeine - a warm welcome from my old friend the Chai Tea latte
- Recent emergence of cooing and smiles - moments you live for
- Being home to welcome lil man when he got home. Giving kisses and hugs
- Staking a permanent claim on the couch with lil lady
- Rush of emotions two weeks before
- Sadness, nervousness, anticipation about heading back
- Contentment upon looking back upon the time, grateful for the time, the memories and my little girl
- Love - for life, family, friends and moments to come
- Peace - ready to step back into reality

Favorite Quotes of the Week

Truth in Mom's Cooking - from the mouth of a 3 year old food critic

OK, so I am not an accomplished chef... and even saying that I can cook may be a bit of a stretch. While I love great food (usually at the hands of some other great chef from one of the local restaurants or cafes), I find myself to be more of a convenience cook.

As a working mom, now with two little ones under three, I am into quick meals (but do try to put the best quality prepared foods, semi-homemade and homemade meals in front of my family). When I do have some time, I really enjoy cooking, but I have lost my knack due to lack of recent practice and have fallen into the realty of convenience as king. (I'd rather spend time playing with my little ones when I get home versus cooking for an extended period of time).

In fact, in one of my earlier postings, I talk about if my son was grown up and today and had to reflect and tell you about his "normal" family life, he just might tell you (sigh, not proud) that food is cooked in 30 seconds and that the microwave is the medium (oven, what's that? just kidding, we're not that bad. frozen pizzas go in the oven, everyone knows that. :)

But seriously, I am currently home on maternity leave, so I decided to try and change this memory and perception and give my family some home cooked meals. I have been devouring the latest cooking books, blogs and magazines to try and create a new meaning of food preparation (stressing patience and emphasizing the wafting aroma of cooking pastas, meats and veges).

This week, I cooked (not a fancy dinner, but an improvement) some quesadillas. I was standing over the stove, grilling the tortillas to the perfect shade of golden brown, when a little steam (ok, so some smoke), hung over the stove.

My little man looks over at me and said, "Fire!" (At first, I had no idea what he was referring to). He said it a few more times and then I grasped that he was referring to the steam or "smoke" coming from my gourmet dinner on the stove.

He then, with his three-year old ear-to-ear grin, turned to me and asked, "Do you have any smoke?" (you see, he likes to ask us daily, "do you have any (fill in the blank)?" Typically he asks us if we have any toys, because we say "no" and then turn the question around to him - and he proudly says yes - as he has many toys).

Then he immediately followed his question with, "Smoke is for choo-choos."

I couldn't have said it any better myself. At that moment, I realized that a new food critic was born.

Bath time bribe

Looking for an inexpensive and almost sure fire way to get your toddler or preschooler excited for bath time? In a word ... dinosaurs.

My 3 1/2 year old, once a fan of bath time, has decided that he is no longer quite as enthusiastic about getting clean. My sister sent him a gift which quickly has become part of our new bath time ritual.

She sent him a packet of capsules containing, "grow in water" dinosaurs. Yes, the little pill shaped capsules which you submerge in water to grow a thumbnail sized creature. A cheesy birthday party gift you say? Maybe, but this worked like magic and continues to do so every night.

We told our lil man that he'd get to "hatch" a dinosaur egg in the bath tub. This instantly peaked his preschool curiosity. Instead of fighting about the end of play and the inevitable transition to bed time, lead in by the infamous "bath" - he immediately wanted to get into the tub.

A bribe you might be thinking? Maybe, but isn't a little serenity and just a little creativity worth it? Now, every night without a dissenting comment or sound, he happily goes up for bath time so that he can "hatch" a dinosaur egg. He picks out one, by the color of the capsule each night, and declares whether it will be a "mommy", "daddy" or "baby". He excitedly tosses it into the tub and ventures in to see what new, exciting species will emerge.

Now, this is what I call a good value. For us it is definitely worth the $1 for an entire package/page of nightly bath time buddies.

Happy One Month Birthday!

Today is our little lady's one month birthday! (Minus two weeks as she is still two weeks away before her original due date).

I can't believe how much she has already grown. Following are milestones that make a mommy proud:

- She weighed 5 lb 6 oz last Friday and her face has filled out. She has plump baby cheeks and a very tiny double-chin.

- She is already out of the first set of teeny preemie clothes and is in the next size up of preemie clothes. Newborn clothes still are huge!

- She is a great eater!

- She is now very alert and wakeful. This was a big transformation from the early days home of just wanting to sleep all of the time.

- We call her squeakers due to all of the sounds that she makes. She is very vocal and expressive already, letting us know how she feels at all times.

We feel so blessed to have this little lady in our lives!! I am proud to be her mommy and feel so fortunate that she is doing so well. She has certainly come a long way from being born at 34 weeks (3 lb 15 oz, 15 1/2 inches long) and from being in the NICU.

Happy Birthday little lady!!! We love you!

Froggies or New Baby Sister?

We received some good advice ... be sure to give your first baby (and now the new big brother or sister) a special gift when the new baby arrives. We had heard that this is one way to make them feel special as their new baby brother/sister is getting the attention and gifts.

We took this to heart and opted for some miniature frogs. Yes, frogs. Come on, when you think of becoming a new big brother, don't you automatically think of frogs?

Our son's school has two mini frogs which my son loves. They are no larger than the size of my thumb. Each "frog bowl" comes fully furnished with two little frogs, colorful rocks, a plant and food. Talk about an easy and effortless gift experience. And get this - the frogs never get any bigger and only need to be fed twice a week. Their bowl only needs to be cleaned three times a year. Sound too good to be true for a pet? Well, it is true! (though we did just learn that the life expectancy of these frogs was 23 years. Yes, 23 years!! I guess we will be sending the frogs with my son when he goes to college. And who needs a wedding present. We will just send the frogs with him.)

So, my husband and I decided to wager whether our lil man would be more interested in his new miniature, swimmingly green friends - or his new baby sister.

We both opted for the frogs (but secretly hoped lil sis would win out) as we had seen his excitement with them and all things fishy (think Nemo - as it is a video favorite these days. In our house fish are king).

We placed the fish on the kitchen table and waited until lil man was home from school. He showed initial excitement about his new little sister, but then spotted the frogs. He named them Bill and Ben (yes, after the Thomas choo-choos) - BUT then turned back to his sister (good boy!).

We were very pleased that she won out and that we don't have to tell her that the frogs won.

A baptism to remember

We finally did it.

Our son, now over three, had not yet been baptized and this was something that both we (and our parents) really wanted to do (and that I had been stressing about for some time). (That or when asking my in-laws for how we could properly thank them for watching our son on our last trip to Mexico, they responded: "Baptize your son." Or maybe the subtle encouragement was when my parents suggested that my son and his cousin have a double baptism. Hints taken. :)

We found a great church (really the biggest factor that held us back when we lived in PA, well one of them at least) and decided that with child number two on the way (who arrived exactly one week later in fact) and with lil man being over three, that the time was now. (Also, knowing that he would only get taller and older, the time had to be now to avoid visions of him being alongside newborns from becoming a reality). (Also, not knowing what a three year old would do at a baptism, being much more vocal, completely unscripted and completely mobile compared to a newborn - we knew that there was the potential for adventure or impeding disaster.)

The big day...

The big day was finally here. We had carefully planned - selecting the most laid back pastor and casual service, hoping that this would ensure that even if a pre-school meltdown erupted, the damage would be minimal - and we could still show our faces again at church.) The wild card was that the baptism was a part of a regular church service. Yes, risky, but we were up for the challenge. A positive though (pushing the odds slightly into our favor) was the fact that our lil man who had sworn off naps (only on the weekends, of course) did decide to take a nap that day.

We all met in the church parking lot and this is where we learned that our niece, a 5 year old 'spirited' little girl, decided to make a fashion statement that day. On the car ride to the church she informed her family that "she wasn't wearing any underwear!" (And important to note, she was wearing a dress!!). They took immediate measures and coaxed her 7 year old sister (under protest) to give up her pair, as she was wearing jeans that day. A move that would prove to be a very good one...

Upon entering the church, we were ushered to the front (a place that as a parent you never, never, never sit with kids (unless you are very brave, which we are not). We met the pastor and then waited for the big moment - which would come about midway through the church service.

We pulled out toys, snacks and every gadget we could come up with to hold our lil man's attention and keep him as quiet as possible. Worked for about 10 min, and then we were saved by the children's sermon...

I wish I could say that our lil man had been to church hundreds of times before his baptism, but that was not the case - so this was his first children's sermon. His niece (the one with the 'new' paid of underwear just acquired in the car) took him by the hand and they were on the alter). The pastor began talking - and so did our son! Lil man (and this was sooo sweet, only something a mom could love) started saying (in his outside voice), "Hi Mommy!" He said it again and again. And in between, he got up a time or two and ran part way back to us and then back on the alter. He was certainly the star of the sermon. And while this went on, we constantly gave thanks that our 5 year old niece didn't spring the "I'm not wearing any underwear" surprise on us at that time. (Especially as she was flipping her dress around. I could only imagine if the congregation would have become real-time reality viewers and if the moment turned into 'Basic Instincts.') Thank goodness we would NEVER have to find that out. I mean, would they escort us out of church? Would we go on the outlaw list for people not to let back in? Would they still baptise our lil man? (Glad we never had to find out the answers to those questions.)

We tried to quietly contain our laughter so not to draw additional attention to ourselves. Then at the end, when the pastor quieted down to say 'Amen' our lil man let out a loud, "Hocus Pocus!!", as he grinned from ear to ear. Yes, it sounded like he was completing a midevil or warlock chant. Only our lil guy! But, truth be told (it was so cute) (and now some trivia) - "Hocus Pocus" was actually something he had been saying (as a kind of joke only a 3 year old and his family would enjoy) as it was the name of the magician's rabbit in "Frosty the Snowman". Come on, doesn't every house watch Frosty the Snowman in summer?? :) If not, you're missing out.

After the children's service, and seeing that no armed guards were going to escort us out, we waited for the baptism to start. A few minutes before it began, the Godfather stepped out. I thought he was going to get his 5 year old who had left a few minutes earlier to explore the church. Then the pastor motioned for us to come up. As we were one Godfather short, we motioned for the entire family to come up. They did and then after the baptism began, the
5 year old ran in and onto the alter. About 30 seconds later, the Godfather could be seen running into the church up the aisle to the alter. Nothing like making an entrance at a baptism! We had told him that it would be more casual, but never thought that it would be this casual!!!

I give the pastor lots of credit, he had his game face on and didn't skip a beat. Then came the water and lil man did a fantastic job!!! We had told him (over and over) what would happen at the service in the hopes that this would prepare him and help to contain any outbursts - and it worked! He was so proud and did a fantastic job through the entire baptism. No "Hocus Pocus", and no, "Hi Mommy". He was a proud lil man and we were very proud parents.

Definitely an experience that we would never forget - due to the spiritual significance it had to all of us (as well as the other moments that you don't plan for, but will never forget).

Big Brother's First Comments on New Lil Sister

It has been quite a journey over the past months. Lots of ups, downs, and worries. However, I am very happy that our lil lady is now home!!!! And with her homecoming, I have wondered how big brother would feel about her arrival. He has been fantastic!!! Following are some of my favorite pre-school sayings that lil man has said about his new baby sister...

- "She came out." Throughout the pregnancy, we have been talking with lil man about his baby sister and about being a big brother. Not knowing what would be absorbed or how it would all be interpreted, we did our best to get him ready. We explained that one day, his lil sister would come out of mommy's belly and would come home. When we shared the first photos of baby sister, my inlaws who were watching my son, shared the news with him. The first thing he said was that "she came out!"

- "She's ok." Lil lady was born at 34 weeks, so she spent her first week and a half in the NICU. I was so excited to introduce lil man to his new baby sister. He did a great job of washing up and when he saw her he smiled from ear to ear. It was a sight that I will never forget. When I asked him what he thought of his new lil sister, he said that she was "ok."

- "Here you go sweetie." It always amazes me to see what commonly used words and phrases that you use are repeated by your lil ones. I was very pleased with this one, as he shared it when he brought her a toy.

Three-Year Old - Simple Pleasures...

You always hear that life is all about the "simple pleasures". Watching my son grow and develop, his vocabulary grow and his sayings definitely are one of life's pleasures.

Here are my recent favorite activities...

Opening/Closing Garage Door: Who knew that pressing the button and opening/closing the garage door could provide such pleasure and joy. I never knew!

Car Windows and the DVD Player: (I smell a theme here). Little man loves putting the car window up and down. Doesn't matter if it is sunny or rainy, he has a blast with it. I think he could play with it for hours. Which brings me to the DVD player and the CD player, he absolutely loves putting movies in and taking them out. I don't know how he does it, but he can sit there and do it over and over again.

Hopping: Why walk if you can hop everywhere? Lil man loves to hop from room to room.

Kissing my belly: He is such a sweetie and kisses his baby sister every day. First on my belly button and then on my mole.

Beep the mommas!: OK, per an earlier post. I stand by my decision to rename this part of my anatomy. They are changing and someone likes to beep them.

Some recent favorite phrases:

Why isn't there a purple traffic light?

Beep "Santa"!

I hear an airplane!

Favorite Foods...

He has become almost an exclusive snacker. I wonder if he will ever eat anything else?

Favorites include:

Popcorn
Yogurt Bites
Hebrew National Hot dogs
Apples (sometimes with Peanut Butter)
Organic Chocolate Milk from Starbucks

This week's favorite toddler phrases

This week we have gotten a kick out of our toddler's growing vocabulary. It is interesting as a parent to see words and phrases you use coming back at you, likely with a different context. It also is fun to see what new and creative phrases that a little one comes up with to express what he sees, hears or feels.

Here are some notable phrases for us this week. What is your toddler saying that you KNOW he picked up from you? What creative phrases does he/she say that are going down into your blogs/journals or notes?

1) HELP! (OK, I don't know where this one came from, but he is saying "HELP!" every time we "encourage" him to do something that he doesn't want to do. Examples include - taking a bath, going potty, going to bed, etc. We went to a restaurant this week and as we were sitting there, what did lil man do? He yelled, "HELP!" at the top of his lungs. I looked around to see if someone was going to come after us. Why do I get the feeling that this is the first of many times this lil man will call us out as he grows up. :)

2) "It's not yours!" (So, lil man loves to say "mine" and again, what almost three year old doesn't? For that matter, I bet adults wish they could say that too!! We use this phrase when the dog takes something that is not his, but this phrase is coming back to haunt us as lil man says it to everyone he meets. We went out for Gelati (really we DO eat at home the majority of the time) and a lil girl around his age was looking through the glass refrigerated case and picking out the flavor of gelati she desired. What did our guy do, he proceeded to yell (his voice carries like his dad - and I swear if we did a science experiment, I think that if you listened carefully, you would hear him speaking if you were within a 10 mile radius). Anyways, lil man proceeded to yell, "That is NOT yours!" He clearly did not want to share the gelati with anyone.

3) "Don't squeeze the penguins!" (Come on. I know, you too use this phrase on a daily basis, right? His new favorite show is the Penguins of Madagascar and in his recent "hall monitor fashion" he now likes to remind us NOT to squeeze the penguins. Try that one out on your friends and family at home. Sure to generate some strange looks. Especially if you are in the grocery store like us and he yells it aloud."

4) "Dat, dat, dat, dat, dat." (Now, another phrase that I am sure must be one of your favorites. Lately when he is running to the slide. He says this. I guess it is because there are still some things he can't seem to express. It is cute and my hubby reminded me of it).

5) "Cars/airplanes/trucks/diggers(you get the idea) are sleeping. They are taking a nap." (When we are in the car or outside he loves to point out all of the vehicles that he sees. Lately when a car is parked or a digger is not being used, he likes to say that they are sleeping and taking a nap. This is just a sweet phrase to us. Only one a parent would love!"

Just your average Saturday

So, what did you do today? It's a Saturday and here is our story...

1. Took a field trip to ... the car wash. Yes, you read correctly. We did not go to the museum, zoo or anything like that. As a family we went to the car wash. Hey, isn't a key to parenting taking the mundane errands you need to run and giving them a fun new twist? In our house it sure is. Lil man LOVES cars and trucks so it was a fun-filled experience. Plus, it is easy to forget the simple pleasures in the little things - like watching your car get soaped up, scrubbed by the giant brushes and then all of the people watching in the lobby.

Favorite quotes from lil man today included:
"Don't bite the dog." Yes, didn't I tell you - he is training to be a future hall monitor. We aspire to great heights here. :) (Not that there is anything wrong with being a hall monitor. I did not mean to offend any professional hall monitors by my post. Nothing should be inferred either one way or the other from my post.) Well, there was a man there with his dog and who wouldn't say, "Don't bite the dog." Lately, lil man has been telling EVERYONE "not" to do different things. It is quite cute and gets fun looks from people of all ages - as he tells anyone he sees (usually perfect strangers).

Even as I write this, I just heard him say, "No screaming." To put that in context, my hubby was telling the dog not to eat the furniture. As lil man gets older, he may appreciate the tone and volume of that one more. My other favorite was at school he scolded a parent and said, "No waving" as they were saying goodbye to their child. I hate to say it, but I either want to shrink in embarrassment or I want to crack up. It all depends who he selects to impart his wisdom upon.

2. Went to the "super park." There is this amazing park in the city's downtown area. If parks and swing sets were rated like restaurants in Zagat's, I think this one would surely make the top of the list. As the sun was finally out, even though the air was crisp, we went and swung for what seemed like an hour. Just seeing lil man's smile made every minute extra special.

3. Meltdown at the bookstore. It wouldn't be a Saturday, or any day that ends in "y", without a meltdown of some sort. We stopped by Barnes & Nobles, which has a fantastic kids section, so I could purchase my first prenatal yoga DVD. I have decided to try and give some level of exercise a try. Funny because when I am not pregnant, I love to workout (and miss my kickboxing and cycle classes). When I am pregnant, I just can't do very much. So, I am hoping that the DVD doesn't stay in a permanent "child's pose" in the box and actually makes it into the DVD player. Verdict is still out. Anyways, the B&N has a train table (much like the one we have at home). But that doesn't matter. Lil man loves it and could play there - alone - (key word) for hours. He was doing great as I grabbed the only DVD they had when another sweet lil child came up to play. That signaled a colossal fit. Because, who wants to share? Def not this lil man. (This is where we think a little bro or sister will do him, and us, good).

4. Naps are a family occasion. Who says naps are only for lil ones? Whomever says it doesn't know what they are missing. Today, tired from our exciting morning or turning the mundane into an adventure, we all took a nap. Mom, Dad, Lil Man and Dog. I love these moments and try to savor them as I know they will only pass too quickly.

5. A security banana? Some kids have a security blanket or special toy. Well, we went to Whole Foods today and lil man picked out his favorite thing, "nannas". He then proceeded to clutch them closely for the entire shopping trip. We barely got them away to be run up at the checkout counter. When we got to the car, he wanted to hold his nannas on the ride home. It was so endearing. I am still kicking myself that I forgot my camera!!

That's the scoop thus far for a Saturday. It is easy for something that is already wired with excitement to be exciting. The challenge and adventure comes when you take something that is ordinary and routine and making it a special day.

What makes your family unique?

I recently awoke at 3:30 am, which is becoming quite common these days - 1) being pregnant, I am making those frequent trips to what I like to call "my second office" and 2) lil man is getting into potty training so much that he wakes and wants to go potty.

On this occasion, I couldn't fall back asleep. A common tale. So, as I lie awake, I thought about our family, our dysfunctions, what made us unique and pondered... If lil man was grown up today, what would he say was unique about his family traditions? Deep thoughts continued making me wonder how he would describe his childhood (to date) and what memories he was forming of family life that he would inevitably pass on or curse and vow to change later in life.

Here is what I came up with. Some things make me want to cringe or make some immediate changes and others make me smile and proud of what makes our family a family. Here are a few of the highlights. I'd love to hear yours!!

1) Family Bed - Togetherness. "You mean, everyone doesn't share the same bed?": If you asked lil man he would tell you that everyone (including Franklin the doxie dog, sleep in one bed). As he has children's asthma, crying it out never worked for us as crying would lead to shortness of breath. I used to be somewhat embarrassed and maybe a little ashamed about this, but I have since learned to embrace it. As I'm a working mom, I love cuddling with him and this becomes such special family time. He loves to cuddle too and I know that as he gets older, and as the new baby arrives, we will be making some changes. So, I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

2) Cooking takes between 30 - 60 sec. "A stove or oven, what are they?": OK, I feel like I am in confession and need to repent. I wish that I was a better cook, but I am all about convenience. (Somehow saying it aloud doesn't seem to make me feel better as I had hoped). :) I do enjoy cooking, but am a novice. After getting home from work, it is just enough to put me over the edge. I would rather spend the time playing with my son versus making a late dinner and then immediately putting him to bed. I really want to do more cooking and as he gets bigger, I hope that I can do this. With that said, I am a convenience cook!

3) Christmas lasts into the Spring.: We just recently, took down our two Christmas trees. This was in part to the basement flooding, but more to either laziness or being busy. Well, really I think it is because I am a big kid at heart. I love the holidays and hate to see them end - especially with a long winter ahead. This is why I talk my hubby into leaving the lights on a little longer. As for the trees, lil man loved saying hello and goodnight to them each day that it warmed my heart. While I know that leaving the decorations up this long may give some an ulcer, I hope that lil man takes away the sentiment. (That or he might describe us as crazy. I guess only time will tell!)

4) "Ornaments, what are they?": This does relate back to No. 3. I really think he would ask this question and likely share stories and his own theories if he were older. I think our trees had a total of maybe three ornaments total on them this year. I know, many of you are probably cursing me or rethinking our friendship, but we just like to keep it simple. We love the lights and other decorations that adorn the house. Also, it makes for clean up much easier. :) (Maybe that is the true reason).

5) Bananas come from Starbucks: OK, now he has outgrown this and has been with us to the grocery store numerous times. However, for the longest time, we would go through the Starbucks drive through and they always had a nice display of bananas. It would immediately send lil man into a repetitive chant, reciting, "Nanas, Nanas, Nanas..." It's funny how adult routines make an imprint on lil ones.

We have many more, but these stood out to me and I thought you might enjoy them too. What are your unique rituals, routines or dysfunctions that your child would share if he/she could?

Biting!! Help - seeking tips!!

Just found out that my lil man, my sweet little man, bit three kids today at school!!! Yes, not just one, but three!!! :( I had really hoped we had missed this phase - without one bite on record.

I still remember when we were checking out daycares, there was a huge sign saying "Biting happens". I didn't know what to think.

So, my guy has become the biter!!! I am filled with a sense of guilt for the other kids and then frustration and shame for us.

Looks like we will be putting discipline in full force starting tonight. If you have any "stop biting" tips, please pass them on!!

Say, what?!

You may recall from a previous post, that I renamed my breasts "mommies". I don't even remember why I did this, but boy am I glad that I did.

My son nursed for a while and even after he was done, he liked to refer to them, talk to them and even (at the most inappropriate times - at daycare) sometime reach for them (almost like it was an ID check to be sure that I was really his mommy). It was much easier to pull him close as he reached for them yelling, "mommies!" versus what would have had me blushing and likely finding a new day care out of sheer embarrassment.

Well, a couple of weeks ago, my husband was out skiing and I was at home with my lil man. We had a great time together. As I am now really showing (feel like I have been showing since I found out I was expecting), I thought it would be fun to have him "kiss the baby", AKA my belly. To me, this protruding belly is impossible to miss - so how could he? When he took no interest, I showed it to him and tried to explain how big mommy's belly was getting because there was a baby in the belly.

Instead of showing any interest, he blurted out (not that I had a big belly, but) ... "BIG Mamas!" I couldn't believe what I had heard. Here the belly had made no impact, but he noticed and commented on my expanding bustline. Now, I am 1,000,000% thrilled that I renamed them "Mamas/Mommies!"

And yes, while my son calls his "mommies" and daddy's "mommies" and even Frank's (the dog's) "mommies" - I would rather correct this when he gets a little older versus take the chance and give him a fun new word right now.

I guess you never really know what little ones will say. :) I can't wait to tell that story to his future finance someday, though, my husband says he will probably be proud of it and I still won't get the last word. :)

What surprising or unexpected things have your little ones said?

Top 10 List - What I miss

If you missed my earlier post, I am proud to share that I am expecting my second baby!! I am nearing the twelve week point and am definitely showing. I always heard that with your second child, your body just remembered what to do - and has it ever!!

Already poured into early maternity clothes and doning a rounder face and figure (curvalicious as my hubby says), I have begun to look forward to all of the things that I can not have (but of course want).

Here is my top 10 list of what I miss and can't wait to have again. :)

10) Caffeine - all sorts!! Especially my typical morning go-to, Starbuck's Chai Tea Latte (specifically a non-fat, extra foamy chai!). Now for the rant... for years I have wished and hoped that Starbucks would come out with flavored Chais or other fun/yummy chai latte drinks. Well, my luck - they have. They have delightful new Apple Chais, Berry Chais and many other wonderful treats. I have cheated and had some sips, but am really missing starting my days with them. However, on the positive side, I am saving money and I guess my body is getting a nice detox!!

9) Diet Cherry Soda - at this point, I would go for any brand! What especially sounds good is a Diet Cherry Coke from Johnny Rockets - you know, the one where they add the cherry syrup. YUM! (I might have to break this rule and just have a small one. YUM!!)

8) Skiing - OK, so this is not for me, but my hubby is going through, "I lost my ski partner", withdrawl.

7) Sushi - I swear, the moment I found I was pregnant, I started craving sushi!! What luck. Though, I think it is more about wanting what I can't have.

6) Exercising in general - I love going to the gym, but have felt very tired and have had to take it easy due to some issues this pregnancy. I had vowed the last time, and 45 lbs later, that I would exercise throughout my pregnancy so I could stay stronger and hopefully shed the pounds faster. Things are not working out that way, so I have decided to embrace pregnancy and am enjoying eating items that I never get to eat. So, bye-bye gym and hello cookies, ice cream, and chips.

5) Flavored Waters - Specifically Aquafina FlavorSplash Grape Flavored Water. I miss this. I was drinking 3-4 of these a day for a while there. I like for my beverages to have a flavor and know that I need to drink more water, so this was my personal compromise. I miss the grape and am just hoping they won't discontinue it.

4) Salads and not eating all the time - I enjoyed eating smaller and healthier meals. I rarely snacked before and was really good about not over eating. The moment I found out I was expecting, I told myself I would workout, eat well, etc. Well, that lasted for about 5 minutes. I have not had the stomach for salads or lighter lunches and have been craving all things junk food. Help!!

3) Kickboxing - yes, might sound funny, but I really miss the exhilaration and great workout feeling you get after a good class. This is one of the only times I actually relax!

2) My old clothes - I remember with my first, that I was actually excited to wear maternity clothes. My belly was my badge and I loved showing it off. While I am still VERY, VERY proud of my badge, I miss my old, cute, smaller clothes. Also being in the in-between pregnancy stage (too small for most of my maternity clothes and too big for my pre-pregnancy clothes) is difficult.

1) Red Wine, Port, Cocktails - we went on a wine tour in Santa Barbara before the holidays. We purchased some great red wine as well as port. I did not get a chance to enjoy it, but am already planning for which bottle I want to enjoy when fall comes around.

Ziplock Home Organization House Party

I was selected to host a Ziplock Home Organization House Party. This was the first time I had hosted a House Party, so I was very interested to see how it would work and to how much people would really get into it. I was pleased on all fronts and am pleased to report that it was a big success.

Ten of us got together for a happy hour, enjoying vino (red of course), pizza and snacks and lots of cool new Ziplock products. The group was impressed by the number of products Ziplock sent and to the breadth of product offering they had in their line. Definitely beyond the Ziplock sandwich bags we all know.

It was clear that Ziplock is looking to expand its profile in the organization space and if their line up is any suggestion to their approach and future leadership, they are primed to take home organization by storm.

So, we spent our evening testing the products, talking about different uses and solutions to bring our homes, crafts, coupons, art projects, toys, clothes, offices (and almost anything) into better order with Ziplock.

Group Favorites - Ziplock Product Winners:
- No. 1 - Ziplock Flexible Totes - Rated Tops by the testers: This came out on tops. As the newest Ziplock item, it was highly coveted - as we only received one. (I was the lucky person who got to keep it!). This tote was lightweight, but still sturdy, and would be a great way to organize sweaters/clothes from season to season or even children's toys or games. As it is soft, versus hard like Rubbermaid containers, it is very pliable and flexible which we liked.

- No 2 - Twist and Seal: This plastic canister had measurement markings on the side (holds up to 4 cups) of the container, perfect for storing dry ingredients. The top did not click and seal, but instead twisted and locked. This was very convenient and a big hit. Everyone wished there were more of these samples to go around.

- No. 3 - Ziplock 100 calorie snack XS bowls: This was a favorite for the moms with young children. We thought that it was perfect for storing cereal and other foods on-the-go. Also, I found that it is a great holder for all of our extra house keys! Now the "stuff" drawer is much better organized and filled with Ziplock containers, including this one.

- No 4 - Ziplock 100 calorie snack bags: This product was more controversial with the group. They felt that the bags, while small, could be misleading to hold more than 100 calories. Also, the group thought they would be harder to reuse. Finally, the question came up about why not just fill another Ziplock you already have with less versus buying another bag.

- No 5 - Ziplock Dry Bags: While I have found some great uses for this product personally (such as putting away my lingering Christmas decorations), others did not find these as useful. They thought they would be more limiting and good for camping. I think there are many uses for them - especially after losing many personal items in our recent basement flood. These bags would have saved many keepsakes which we lost.

(PS - We all fell in love with the "goodie bags" which Ziplock sent. So cute!! Loved the design. People thought they would make good lunch bags, good to store pictures, etc. Who knew that an acutal goodie bag would be so hot!)

Comments/Suggestions:
-Good Experience Overall: Everyone agreed that it was a good experience. We had fun and enjoyed sharing organizational tips and trying out the new products. The group also enjoyed helping others to identify organization solutions to fit their needs.

- Good Materials a Key to Success: Ziplock did a very nice job sending tips, conversation starters, note pads, pens, home organization ideas (by each room of the house) and coupons! We decided that anyone who holds such a party really needs to do their pre-work and develop the best materials possible.

- House Party Web Site: Very nice site. Good layout, holding everything you need to host your party - from sending out invites, to talking with other party hosts, posting pictures, videos, etc. Very well done.

- Only Criticism: All parties are suppose to be held on one night. While this might be ideal, it is not always realistic if you have a sick child or if that already is a very busy plan filled night. We thought it would be better to have a few day/small window in which each host should have their party. This would ensure that the maximum amount of people can attend - which we thought would be better appreciated by the companies paying for House Parties.

We had a blast and I look forward to posting more of the creative, organizational ideas which the girls shared. A fun night with good friends and good products. I hope that I am selected to host another one in the future!!! Thank you House Party and Ziplock for choosing me!!!

It's Official!!!

OK, I have been quiet lately, but for good reason (and if you know me, that is a rare occurrence). I have wanted to post a teaser message or let the secret slip, but have sat on my hands and fought not to let the news out too soon. (Though, I did send one tweet saying, "I got some fantastic news today." That was all I let slip out in the twitterverse and cyberspace. I was proud of myself.)

So, if you have not guessed, I am expecting my second!!! We are very excited!! I officially found out on Christmas Eve when I was sick with a sinus infection and on some pretty strong drugs. I felt like something was different and did what anyone would do and bought three preg tests! :) (I swear, that business must make $$ hand over fist. I don't know anyone who has just purchased one test. It seems like you always purchase at least two just to be sure that the magical sticks are telling the truth!)

Back to the story... it was very early, so I got a dulled positive. I decided to take measures into my own hands (as I mentioned earlier, I don't trust the sticks) and got into my doc. I fibbed to my hubby, saying that I thought I needed more medicine to vanquish the sinus infection and off I went. Well, the news was confirmed - a big positive!! What an amazing gift!!! The best Christmas gift I would likely ever receive.

As this was Christmas Eve, I needed to think fast to determine how was I going to tell the father-to-be as well as family. (OK, I would normally NEVER share the news so quickly. The first time we waited 13-14 weeks just to be extra safe. However, with it being Christmas time and knowing this would make for the best gift to family, we had to share the news.)

With my first, we took a more elaborate approach. We took a Christmas card, with me and my hubby pictured in Barcelona and wrote something like this (taking a page out of the Mastercard commercial playbook): Time off - fantastic; Vacation in Barcelona - unbelievable, three of us in this photo - priceless. While it was funny to see our families looking for our doxie dog, they thought he was number three, they slowly put the facts together.

So, for number two, knowing I needed to act fast. I purchased a bear ornament, stating, "Baby's 1st Christmas" on it. (Hey, on short notice and not trying to draw out suspicions from my hubby, I darted to the closest CVS - had to think fast and beggers could not be choosers.) I snuck away when I arrived home and wrapped it as fast as possible.

You see, I really wanted to give the gift to my hubby to not only share the news, but also to help him replan his birthday plans for the days after Christmas. You see, we were planning to stay overnight downtown (little man would hang out with his grandparents) and we were going to go on a wine bar extravaganza tasting! Now, plans had to change. So, I gave the gift to my hubby and once he opened it .. he looked at it, not really knowing what it was or what it meant at first. After a few seconds, he put the pieces together. He was surprised, a little shocked and excited. We both agreed that it was the best Christmas gift ever.

So, I am pleased to share with my "momsplayroom" friends, the news. We are due in September and can't wait to give little man a sibling!!

I hope your holidays brought you the same joy and cheer - and maybe a little unexpected, positive surprise.

Happy Valentine's Day Mom!!

I received this poem as a forward. I typically do not pass these things along, but when I read it, I thought it summed up what it was to be a mom. So, for all you moms out there, Happy Valentine's Day!!

Being a Mom

Before I was a Mom, I never tripped over toys
or forgot words to a lullaby.I didn't worry whether or not
my plants were poisonous.I never thought about immunizations.

Before I was a Mom,
I had never been puked on.Pooped on.Chewed on.Peed on.I had complete control of my mind
and my thoughts.I slept all night.

Before I was a Mom, I never held down a screaming child
so doctors could do tests.Or give shots.I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin.I never sat up late hours at night
watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom,I never held a sleeping baby just because
I didn't want to put her down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces
when I couldn't stop the hurt.I never knew that something so small
could affect my life so much.I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom..

Before I was a Mom,I didn't know the feeling of
having my heart outside my body.I didn't know how special it could feel
to feed a hungry baby. I didn't know that bond
between a mother and her child. I didn't know that something so small
could make me feel so important and happy.

Before I was a Mom,
I had never gotten up in the middle of the night
every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay.I had never known the warmth,
the joy,
the love,
the heartache, the wonderment
or the satisfaction of being a Mom..I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much,
before I was a Mom.

That Kind of Parent - Wear it Proudly

Today I have come to the realization that I AM "that kind of parent." And I'm proud to say it!!

Before having kids, I remember seeing families in stores and when the little one acted up, they would get a toy, cookie or some type of "reward". I vowed that I would NEVER be that kind of parent. (Ha! Who was I kidding.)

However, upon having a little man of my own, and now knowing the "true parent secret" behind giving in a bit here and there (Yes, Survival - it will make you do the darndest things), I proudly admit - I am a supporter. Some people may try to hide this badge or do it silently or out of the public light, but I will proudly say that there are times when you just have to give a little to get a lot. Now, I'm not saying to give little Johnny a candy bar or a huge new toy, but if letting him having a bite of a bananna (which is on your list and which you are buying already) does the trick, then go for it!

What I didn't realize before being a parent is that there are many daily battles. Battles to get little ones on the potty (and then to use it), to get them dressed (preferably in clothes - though a Wonder Pets PJ shirt is OK frome time to time), eating some breakfast (without feeding it to the dog or getting mad and throwing it on the floor - where the dog eats it - not like this has ever happened to us before), etc. With that said, the battles are much, much less than all of the wonderful time where they are beyond flexible for being carted around to stores - when let's face it, they would prefer being at home playing with their toys. If we ask them to "give a little" and haul them with us, then what is wrong with giving them a little when they need it?

Not Ready to Let the Holidays Go ...

The holidays have come to a close and last night it dawned on me that we are the ONLY house on our street that still has its Christmas lights on and trees up. I believe there are three types of people out there - A) people who take decorations down right after the holidays, B) people who let decorations linger a bit and C) people who just don't decorate.

Beyond the arctic weather, that I can surely use as an excuse, I have come to the realization that I am just not ready to say goodbye to the holidays!

I am not ready to accept the reality of no more time off, no more Christmas cookies (second thought, maybe I can give them up. Pants are feeling a little snug), idea of giving, seeing Christmas lights through the snow, counting the Christmas trees with my son as we drive home, - and accept the realization that it is going to be a long, cold and snowy winter.

I love the spirit that Christmas and the holidays bring. The sense of anticipation, excitement (even with all of the craziness of plans, visiting relatives and everything) makes me feel like a kid again. And seeing my little man, who for the first time really seemed to understand Christmas (he says "Ho, "Ho" - I still don't know where the other "Ho" went, calls everything a present - even after it's opened) I just don't want to let it all go. Not to mention that I am NOT a fan of taking decorations down.

So, I'm thinking that we may have to rethink this "Christmas is over" thing after all - just like we did twice before. You see, some folks go for World Records, but as for my family we go for records on seeing how long we can leave the decorations up. And if you are sensing from my note that we have experience here, you are right.

A few years ago, we did our first, "boycott the end of Christmas/don't feel like taking the lights down" experiment. It was January, when most respectful people have long taken down their decorations that we decided to leave the lights on the house and the tree up. We felt empowered!! Who said that Christmas had to end and that we had to put everything away on somebody else’s terms. No way. Not this year.

February arrived and we decided to decorate the tree, or what had become our house plant, in Valentine decorations. What a great red glow! When March rolled around we hardly noticed the tree was still up, if it had not been for comments from family and friends. On April 1, we decided to take the outside lights down. Our neighbor thought it was the best “April Fools” joke he had seen in years. But – we still kept the tree up. When May and the Indy 500 race rolled around, we decided to succumb and to take the tree down. I must say, that for the first time ever, we actually enjoyed ourselves.

OK, while I was glad that the tree was finally down (and we had our family room back), it felt good to somehow close the holidays on our terms. I don’t know if we will go for a repeat, but we sure enjoyed the conversation that our Christmas house plant brought through the months.

We didn't stop there... A few years later, we moved into a new house and put up a tree in the Living Room. When the holidays passed, the tree stayed up - lights and all. We then felt the need to break our own record of May. So, there the tree stood. We even turned it on when people were coming over so they could pick out our house from others in the neighborhood. I remember when my in-laws were visiting, we informed them that our house was the one with the Christmas tree! Did I mention that they were visiting in July?! We ended up keeping the tree up for the entire year. I don't know if that accomplishment will get us any awards (or maybe just strange looks), but it was fun.

While I don't think we will go for a repeat of living the tree and lights up all year, I think that leaving them up for the rest of the month will do.

So, which person are you? Did this post drive you crazy (if so you are person A)? Are you ready to put the lights away or are you like me and want to hold onto the holidays for a little while longer?
